LOS LOBOS THE CANYON CLUB 1/30/2014

I’ve seen Los Lobos several times over the last 20+ years and they are always an awesome band in concert.
I once saw them play a show with Fishbone and Tom Waits. Another time, they played at the Experience Hendrix show alongside Living Colour, Joe Satriani and others on the bill that ou wouldn’t think of pairing with Los Lobos.

They’ve been a band for around 40 years and they still put on a great show. I’m pretty sure these are all original/ founding members of the band.
Their music is very diverse and they are fantastic musicians.

For this show, they played close to a two hour set that included some folk, ranchero music, a little R&B, with lots of rock and blues. A little accordion here, a few little guitars there, some saxophone…… it was cool.

Their encore included “Cinammon Girl” by Neil Young and “La Bamba” – that was a great movie with an awesome soundtrack. For La Bamba, they threw a little bit of “Good Lovin'”.
Another great show…

GUITAR CENTER DRUM OFF LA LIVE CLUB NOKIA 1/18/2014 CHAD SMITH, STEVE FERRONE, RAY LUZIER, STEVE PERRY and many more

Concertologist

Before the Guitar Center Drum Off at Club Nokia, it was only fitting to pay a visit to the Grammy Museum for the Ringo Starr exhibit. Some of his vintage kits are on display, both in the lobby and on the second level, where you you can take a video drum lesson from Ringo on an electronic kit, sing along to the Yellow Submarine video in an iso room, sit in the Clive Davis Theater and watch a Ringo documentary that covers his music and movie career. Caveman is a personal favorite. There are all kinds of neat Beatles things to check out.

There were also great exhibits for Cheap Trick and John Fogerty. It’s a great time to visit the Grammy Museum.

Andy McKee Smothers Theater Pepperdine University Malibu, CA 1/10/2014

Pepperdine is a beautiful campus and this is a great theater.   I got kind of lost trying to find this place, but it all worked out.

Parking is easy.   You can park right next to the venue or  take a shuttle up to the venue from the lower lot.

DSC03394DSC03395

There’s not a bad seat in the venue.    It’s a big room with high ceilings and good sound and lighting.

He had two guitars on the stage and that was about it.

There were some parents with a baby at the show.   That’s a lucky little kid right there!!!

Andy started his show a little after 8:00 PM.    This was my 3rd time seeing him play.    This was the best since he was the solo headline performer and put in almost two hours of playing.

His playing style is very unique combination of percussion, technique and creativity.   He slaps, taps…

A great band, a wonderful set list and many costume changes are the first three things that come to mind for the Bella Donna Tribute to Stevie Nicks show tonight.

Katie Daryl came out and introduced the band at the start of the show.

DSC02521DSC02514DSC02523

Led by Michelle Tyler, Bella Donna started off with “Stand Back” and it was a great way to get things underway.

The next song was “Dreams”, followed by “Gold Dust Woman”.   The costume changes and great tunes just kept coming.  The band was excellent.  Every player and both back up singers completely rocked.

Then, the singer for the PettyBreakers did a duet with Bella Donna – “Stop Draggin’My Heart Around”.   That was a high point of the show.   The PettyBreakers will be appearing on the WGTB show on February 24.  It would be fantastic if Belladonna came out and played on the song “Insider” (the…

Wild Child The Canyon Club 1/11/2014

I first got to experience Wild Child’s tribute to the Doors at The Roxy last year for  their television special on AXS TV’s World’s Greatest Tribute Bands.

DSC08794DSC08883DSC08947

Singer Dave Brock is obviously the real deal when it comes to singing the  music of Jim Morrison and The Doors.

At the time, he was the lead singer for Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger’s band, which, all lawsuits aside, essentially made him the last singer of The Doors.

Unfortunately, Ray Manzarek passed away a short time after the show.

At the end of the summer, Robby Krieger, along with Scott Medlock threw an incredible fundraising concert event in Moorpark, CA for St Jude Children’s Hospital

Living up  to the name as the greatest tribute to the Doors, the show at the Canyon was fantastic.   The songs and the performance just kept getting better and better.   The large crowd was so…

“Galactic Booty Co.”  is a new band that features three drummers did sound track work for  “Man of Steel“.    The band consists of Curt Bisquera, Toss Panos, and Satnam  Ramgotra – three truly remarkable drummers.

They started off playing as a trio with “Kirkee B” on a cocktail kit, Toss Panos on a traditional DW kit, and Satnam Ramgothra on a tabla, cajon and a DW woofer  (Satnam credited Toss with the set up).

PURPLE REIGN AXS TV WORLD’S GREATEST TRIBUTE BANDS HOSTED BY KATIE DARYL PRINCE TRIBUTE SHOW WHISKY A GO-GO 1/6/2014

unnamed_thumb[1]

DSC01417_thumb[1]

AXS TV kicked it into high gear tonight for the premiere of their Season 3 with an excellent Prince Tribute by Purple Reign at the Whisky A Go Go.

A long time ago, I tagged along with a friend to the Prince concert (if I remember correctly he was the “Artist Formerly Known As Prince” during this time)   I was more of a casual fan when I attended, but I left that show a huge fan.

At the time, that was the best concert I had ever seen.   Over the years, I have bought just about every Prince album and I have seen him in concert many times since.  He is on a completely different level when it comes to performance and musicianship.

I remember being in Las Vegas a long while back and heard a band in a casino lounge playing marvelous versions of Prince songs.      That band was Purple Reign and I knew before the show that they were truly deserving of being billed as the World’s Greatest Tribute Band.  My first thought was “”Are they going to play Darling Nikki?”

I figured it would be a rather tame set list, but fortunately, I was way wrong.    The music and the performances with his onstage dancer were quite sexy, risqué, and at times, quite arousing.   I felt like I was really at a Prince concert and I was thinking dirty thoughts while watching the show.    It brought back memories of seeing the movie “Purple Rain” when I was a little kid.

Purple Reign kicked off the show with “Let’s Go Crazy”.   The place was rocking.   It was one awesome tune after another with “Kiss”, “I Wanna Be Your Lover” and he was joined onstage with a hot dancer during Raspberry Beret.

DSC01510DSC01520DSC01523DSC01524DSC01525DSC01530DSC01532DSC01534DSC01538DSC01551DSC01763DSC01764

The show was highly entertaining and an extravagant production with all the costume changes, the excellent vocals, musicianship and excellent song selection.  The crowd really came to life for the favorites “1999” and “Little Red Corvette”

DSC01605DSC01609DSC01623

Prior to the encore, the inclusion of “Jungle Love” with a Morris Day and Jerome duo was a great call.

DSC01628DSC01629DSC01631DSC01632DSC01640DSC01644DSC01648DSC01651

The encore itself was fantastic.  “When Doves Cry” was incredible, “Purple Rain” rocked as purple glow sticks lit up the venue and the ended out with “I Would Die 4 U” and went off the air with the fantastic “BAby I’m A Star”.   After that, things got wild with the most NSFW tune yet on AXS TV.  It rocked and was definitely too hot for TV.  Video below.    This show was a total win.

DSC01654DSC01673DSC01674DSC01690DSC01706DSC01719DSC01720DSC01723DSC01726DSC01751DSC01753DSC01756DSC01656_thumb[1]DSC01662_thumb[1]DSC01758

Purple Reign  does an amazing job at paying tribute to the incredible musician currently known as Prince.    Jason Tanner does Prince so well and the rest of the band is also top notch.   I will definitely be seeking out their Vegas show the next time I am in Sin City.

Set list:

Let’s Go Crazy
Kiss
Wanna Be Your Lover
Raspberry Beret
Little Red Corvette
Poplife
1999
Jungle Love

Encore:
When Doves Cry
Purple Rain
I Would Die 4 U
Baby I’m A Star

WINGS BAND (Paul McCartney. Wings Tribute) THE CANYON CLUB January 4, 2014 1/4/2014

DSC01279

I saw an insane number of tribute band concerts last year.   Out of every tribute band I’ve ever seen, The Fab Four from Season 2 of AXS TV’s The World’s Greatest Tribute Band was by far the best act I’ve ever witnessed.

DSC02971DSC02988

I was very excited to hear that the Wings Band, which has several members of the Fab Four, was going to be on Season  of the show and had to catch them before their big TV date at the fantastic Canyon Club.

The band, complete with horn section, came out and did a 90 minute set of incredible Paul McCartney and Wings tunes.

As a special surprise, Laurence Juber came out during the encore and rocked some tunes with the band.    Incredible!
